GLAGOLITIC SCRIPT
The oldest Slavic script, all Croatian “oldest” and “first” achievements were made in Glagolitic script (Baška tablet, Vinodol Code, etc.). Glagolitic is an alphabetic script created from scratch in the mid-9th century to simplify writing Slavic languages for spreading Christianity among Slavic peoples. It was designed for the phonetic system around Thessaloniki, which formed the basis of the first Slavic literary language: Church Slavonic.
LACE
Croatian lace-making was inscribed on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage in Europe in 2009. Originally linked to clergy and nobility, lace-making came to us through tradition and material remains as part of ethnographic heritage tied to rural populations. It was part of traditional textile handicrafts within self-sufficient village production, primarily used to decorate women’s traditional clothing and linen. Today, Croatia has three main lace centers continuing this long tradition: Lepoglava in Hrvatsko Zagorje with bobbin lace, and on the Adriatic coast, the town of Pag with needle lace and the island of Hvar with agave lace.
TIE
An original Croatian product, the tie spread throughout Europe in the 17th century via Croatian soldiers during the Thirty Years’ War. Since October 18, 2003, the Day of the Tie is celebrated. On that day, in Pula, Marijan Bušić’s art installation “Tie around the Arena” was performed, broadcast by some world TV stations and seen by over a billion people. The installation connected all Croatian regions with a red thread, symbolizing cultural and geographic diversity.
