It is well known that the number one million is associated with Marco Polo. Upon his return to Venice, Marco Polo recounted his adventures with grand exaggerations, inflating facts, descriptions, and numbers. This made him famous, and the usual numerical expressions became too small to match his tales. At that time, there was no special word for one million, only “one thousand thousands.” Since his middle name was Emilio (full name Marco Emilio Polo), the term “emilioni” soon spread among the Venetian people, and with a slight modification, a new number was born.
